Foundation Basic Makeup Essentials
One basic makeup essential everyone thinks of first is foundation because it evens out your skintone and gives you a flawless complexion. However, if you don’t like foundation, opt for or a tinted moisturizer instead and watch this tutorial on how to apply foundation here.
Kendra’s Makeup Artist Suggestion
Best: Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Makeup (My favorite for buildable coverage for myself and for clients.)
Budget Friendly: Loreal True Match
Concealer Basic Makeup Essentials
Concealer is important to have in order to awaken the under eyes and delete any blemishes from the skin. We all have a pimple we want to go away every now and again.
Kendra’s Makeup Artist Suggestions
Best: Tarte Shape Tape updated to this amazing concealer option. There is really nothing else like it.
Budget Friendly: Revlon Colorstay
Blush/Bronzer Duo Basic Makeup Essentials
You can keep your makeup essentials cosmetic bag simplified by using a blush/bronzer duo option. Below are a few of my favorites.
Kendra’s Makeup Artist Suggestions
Best: NARS Orgasm/Laguna blush/bronzer (This is a classic and long time fave. It goes well on almost all skin tones.)
Budget Friendly: E.L.F Contouring Blush and Bronzer Duo in Bronzed Pink Beige
Highlighter Basic Makeup Essentials
As a makeup artist, I like to use cream highlighters and powder options. Creams are typically easier to work with and leave a lot less of a mess which is what I prefer for myself. But, powder highlighters that are finely milled work well too and are sometimes less intimidating.
Kendra’s Makeup Artist Suggestions
Best: Benefit Watt’s Up Highlighter (good for pale to medium skin colors)
Budget Friendly: Morphe Highlighter Powder in Irridescent Pink
Eyeshadow Palette Basic Makeup Essentials
Eyeshadow Palettes are a basic essential to a good makeup bag. With that said, you don’t need more than one eyeshadow palette for everyday use. For beginners, I would recommend getting a basic everyday eyeshadow palette that is neutral in color so that it will go with a majority of your clothing choices. For makeup junkies that are pairing down, customize a makeup palette for yourself with the eyeshadows you know you will use daily.
Kendra’s Makeup Artist Suggestions
Best: Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette with Free Shipping
Budget Friendly: Morphe Fall Into Frost Eyeshadow Palette
Eyeliner Basic Makeup Essentials
Having an eyeliner is important for those moments when you want to bump up your makeup from daytime to night! I would suggest getting one in black and in a retractable pencil form.
Kendra’s Makeup Artist Suggestions
Best: Tarte Double Take Eyeliner Goes on smooth and stays without smudging.
Budget: Revlon Colorstay Eyeliner in Black works really well and stays all day.
Mascara Basic Makeup Essentials
Mascara is definitely an essential in my book. If you are going to do it, though, get black. Black mascara helps to bring out the colors of your eyes no matter what shade they are. As a makeup artist, if someone tells you to get brown mascara, just run away.
Kendra’s Makeup Artist Suggestions
Best: Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara By far the best mascara I’ve tried. I always go back to this for gorgeous lashes.
Budget: L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara (budget friendly)
Brow Pencil Basic Makeup Essentials
Brows are an essential to making any makeup, whether minimal or dramatic, look its best. Please do not skip this basic beauty essential for everyday use. It’s important. If you need a step by step tutorial on how to apply your basic brow, check this blog post out.
Kendra’s Makeup Artist Suggestions
Best: Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz This is one of my all time faves for the perfect brow. It’s easy to use and doesn’t smudge.
Budget: NYX Brow Pencil (budget friendly)
Lipstick + Lipgloss + Lipliner Basic Makeup Essentials
Lipstick or gloss is an important basic makeup essential. I would suggest having a few lipstick and gloss options to choose from based on your comfort. With that said, do me a favor and include at least one lipstick shade that is different from what you usually wear..red is a start.
Kendra’s Makeup Artist Suggestions
Lipstick
Best: NARS Audacious Lipstick in Raquel Everyone..EVERYONE…love this nude lipstick color. Raquel is perfect for pretty much anyone and the pigment is incredibly rich.

What Every Beginner Needs to Have in Her Makeup Kit
1. MOISTURIZER AND PRIMER
From eyelash curlers to kabuki brushes, there are so many makeup tools on the market that it can be tough to figure out exactly where to start. If you’re ready to step your game up but don’t want to waste space or money on unnecessary items, we’ve got your back. The must-have items we’ve rounded up are not only are easy for newbies to use, they’ve been put to the test and have quickly become our own favorites. Discover exactly what you need to have on hand with our selects below.
Great makeup begins with great skincare. Prep your skin with a tandem slathering of moisturizer and primer. The duo will ensure a flawless base that keeps makeup in place all day.
2. CONCEALER AND FOUNDATION
Beginners can eliminate the risk of caked-on foundation by adding an opaque concealer to their kit. L.A. Girl’s creaseless formula camouflages imperfections, allowing you to use less foundation. When paired with Makeup Forever’s HD Invisible Cover Foundation, no one will be able to tell where your skin ends and the makeup begins.
3. EYEBROW POMADE AND SPOOLIE BRUSH
Among the most important features on your face: the eyebrows. Use the dual-sided Anastasia Beverly Hills tool to brush and sculpt perfect arches. The brand’s Dipbrow Pomade is also a beginner favorite as it’s easy to apply and smudge proof.
4. EYELINER AND MASCARA
There’s really no need to fiddle around with applying false lashes. Tag-team Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, which gives the illusion of thicker fringe, with a few swipes of Benefit’s They Are Real Lengthening Volumizing Mascara to add dramatic length.
