Why Face Primers?

Like many of you, I didn’t understand why a primer would be needed. However once you try it, there is no going back. Foundation primers help keep your makeup on longer and reduce the appearance of fine lines, large pores, and even acne scarring. They also give your skin a silky texture, which I know we all would love to have.

Most cosmetic companies will recommend a primer to go with their makeup, but you should be careful especially if you are the type that struggles with acne.  Why? Because most primers have an ingredient in them called Dimethicone, a form of silicone.  Dimethicone is too large to penetrate the skin so it acts as a barrier, keeping things from going into and out of the skin. This is great for normal to more mature skin as it helps you maintain moisture, but for acne prone, it can keep the oils trapped which can produce more pimples. However, there is a primer that is silicone-free (plus cruelty free) from Tarte Cosmetics called ReCreate™ Silicone-Free Primer with Wrinkle Rewind™ Technology. But just because it is silicone free doesn’t mean it won’t break you out, I would still suggest asking for a sample to try first.

Now that you know more about what a primer is, you may be wondering how in the world you would use it. After going through your daily skin care routine, and your face is dry, apply a pea to dime size amount all over your face with your (clean) hands. Wait about 30 seconds to let it dry before putting on your foundation. ,

Also remember that not every primer is the same. Some have better ingredients than others. Some claim to have “anti aging” benefits to them. This is great, but may also cost you more.

Finally, there are so many different primers out there, it really is hard to choose “the best.” I spent some time doing research (so you do have to) on MANY primers, are here are some that I would recommend. I  also narrowed down other options for different skin types. If you have tried one of the primers I have recommended, or have found a primer you love already, share your thoughts with us!

Makeup Forever HD Microperfecting Primer: Normal/Combo Skin

If you don’t know already, I am a little obsessed with anything from Makeup Forever. The quality of their product (in my opinion) is hard to find, and they are so innovative with their product! I like this primer because it is lightweight and OIL-FREE but doesn’t make your face feel dry. It comes in 6 colors, including color correcting shades. Love that!

Urban Decay Complexion Primer Potion– Normal/Oily

This primer works well for oily skin because it absorbs oil to give a matte complexion. Sometimes with matte primers, they can look and feel heavy. This one does not! This is a great option for those of you who really struggle with being oily and have a hard time keeping your foundation on. There are two different formulations for this product, get the Pore Perfecting. Cost? Around $30.00

For those of you who are concerned about Parabens and Dimethicone, this could be a great option for you! It also has tons of anti- aging benefits! This is so helpful! I just have one question, do you still use a moisturizer after washing your face?

    • Anonymous

Hi Christine! Thanks for you comment, I love feed back! And yes you will still want to use your moisturizer before you put on your primer. Hope that helps! Have a lovely day

  • Hey, I am wondering, have you tried the Olay Covergirl brand?? I had heard it was just as good as the Smashbox so that’s what I use. I don’t personally have anything to compare it to, but I love it! Just wondering your thoughts. It is so much cheaper, so if you try it and like it maybe add that one to the list! 😉
