Laura Mercier Silk Creme Moisturizing Photo Edition Foundation

I am going to start out this foundation review off here: the Laura Mercier Silk Creme Moisturizing Photo Edition Foundation is one of the longest names given ever for a foundation. I just had to get that out of the way. If you have never tried anything from Laura Mercier, the foundation department is a good way to start. Prior to this new foundation, I had only ever tried the brands highly rated tinted moisturizers that also happens to be one of the top tinted moisturizers of all time. Needless to say,  I keep a stash in my makeup kit at all times because clients love them.

All to say, I have high hopes for the Silk Creme Moisturizing Photo Edition Foundation not only because it’s from a favorited brand but because anything that is touted as photo friendly spikes my interest.

This new found foundation doesn’t have the highest score on the Laura Mercier website (3 out of 5 stars) because it was reformulated and marketed as being more moisturizing. Some people like the new formula, and some don’t. It’s tricky and can be super annoying when you love a foundation formula, and it get’s switched up; so I understand the complaints. I have personally never tried the original version, so I don’t have anything to compare it to other than itself. With that said, I tested the foundation prior to checking out ratings, so my personal experience is based on how it feels on my skin and if it lives up to the marketed expectations. So, let’s find out.

Marketed Expectations:

  • 12 hour coverage
  • highly pigmented
  • full coverage
  • luminous finish
  • good under camera and video

My Experience:

I was sent the color Ivory, which I thought would be waaay to light for me. But the Ivory color has more of a yellow tint to it and is a little darker than what I would choose for an Ivory skin toned person if I were doing their foundation color match. For me though, Ivory worked out well and suited my skin perfectly and made me a happy beauty blogger. I do have to say though that if an Ivory foundation shade suits me, I would be a little concerned with the lighter choices in the formula for my pale skinned friends. I would highly recommend going in for a color match before purchasing. If you can’t do that, Nordstroms has a great return policy for purchasing cosmetics online. Just buy several colors and return the shade that doesn’t work.

Now let’s talk about the coverage, stay and pigmentation of the Laura Mercier Silk Creme Moisturizing Photo Edition Foundation. First off, I only used a pea size amount for my entire face; that’s a good sign that the pigmentation is strong and potent. I liked how easy this foundation spread on the skin, and that it didn’t feel heavy while giving complete coverage. I even used this under my eyes and didn’t need any concealer afterward.

I have more combo skin and felt like this foundation worked well with it.  I can see however that if someone has dry skin, this might be a little bit more matte than they want. For me though, it was the perfect mix of matte and luminosity. I still felt like my skin had a great glow to it, and I was impressed with how well it stayed on my skin after spending a full day in hot and humid weather conditions. ( Thank you Austin, Texas Spring weather.)  As far as the longevity, I had it on a very full 12 hours, and it didn’t budge.

As far as being photo friendly, it’s important to use a product that has high pigmentation without making the skin look overdone and cakey. This product has everything going for it as far as working with a camera, but that doesn’t mean that it couldn’t look terrible too if you didn’t know how to apply it properly. Below is how I would apply this makeup to make it work well under the camera.

How to Apply: Like I said before, you only need a pea size amount for your entire face. So start by dotting the foundation next to your nose, the center of your chin, and forehead. Then use a wet beauty blender and gently blend it towards the outside of your face. If you decide that you need more coverage, just apply a tiny bit more to that area. Do not be heavy handed what-so-ever with this product.

There are only 12 colors in the Laura Mercier Silk Creme Moisturizing Photo Edition Foundation ranging from a light Rose Ivory to a darker Truffle making it a bit more limited with color choices. But if you are looking for a new foundation that is full coverage, you should give this one a try.  Personally, I enjoyed this foundation and will be replenishing it when it’s gone.
