Seven years ago I started this beauty/lifestyle blog as an extension of my job as a makeup artist and it morphed into its own thing. While I’m not a full-time stay at home mom who blogs, I do spend a huge amount of time on this blogging business. As a mom of three little ones under seven, I had to get creative with how I was going to make this blogging as a stay at home mom thing work. I have learned a lot of tips and tricks over the years and I am going to share with you my top five.
Tip 1: Set a Schedule
If you are a SAHM mom blogger, setting a schedule that allows you to be present at home and yet hustle as you create content is imperative. There are times when my kids play while I am trying to get something for my blog finished, but for the most part, I am present with them. If you don’t set a blogging schedule, your blogging business will take over your life. Between writing content and promoting it on all social media platforms, responding to emails, posting an Instagram post, responding to comments; blogging can be busy. You can write your content during naps, during school hours, or after the kids go to bed. Or, you can do what I do which is have a babysitter watch my kids for 6 hours, two days a week, so that I can bust out everything I need to get done.
Tip 2: Get Ready
There is something about getting out of my well-loved yoga pants and actually “getting ready for a work day” that helps me get into blogging from home mode. I do my makeup and hair and put on some clothes that make me feel like a mother hustler and get to work. Being a blogging mom is a self-motivated job and so it’s important to do everything I can to get to work and get my ish done.
Tip 2: Get Organized
As a mom of three, there are daily surprises that can make being a SAHM blogging mom a challenge. When you have a blogging career and your also a stay at home mom of small kids, being organized isn’t an option. If you struggle with an organized life like I do you, you definitely need to set your work hours and stick to them. Once you have figured that out, map out your blogging content for a minimum of one month ahead of time. Doing this allows you to also figure out what your daily tasks need to be like writing content, scheduling out your social media posts, or gathering materials you need for your photoshoots.
One of the best items I have ever purchased for getting organized and setting blogging goals was the self-journal. It has an area to write out your tasks for the day and month, plus set your goals for making your blog (or whatever) successful. I highly, highly recommend it!
Tip 3: Find a Space
Creating a peaceful workspace for you to work at home as a blogging mom is important. I have an office space that is a kid-free zone that helps me to get into working boss mom mode. But before that, I would set up at my kitchen table or at the desk we kept in our bedroom and put on my headphones to drown out any background noise. Your working space could be anywhere you want; just make sure it feels tranquil (no kid toys) so that you can get into work mode.
Tip 4: Stay Focused
I don’t know about you, but my phone is constantly blowing up with text messages, phone calls, and social media notifications. During my blogging mom work hours, I put my phone on Do Not Disturb so that I am not distracted. I don’t go on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest etc. to scroll through and see what everyone is doing. I will only get on if I am doing my blogging chores and if it is on my daily to-do checklist.
I check my phone every 20 minutes to see if there is an emergency or anything urgent that I need to respond to like, “hey your kid is sick” or “babe-call me back a.s.a.p.” from my husband. But ultimately, your limited work time is precious and you need to stay focused.
Ultimately, make sure that you have fun as a blogging mama. While this job can be stressful and there are always things to be done, it’s so amazing to stay at home and make money that supports my family.
