If you are looking for a non-toxic way to clean and whiten your teeth, check out this DIY activated charcoal toothpaste recipe. I’m sure you’ve seen by now the pictures of people rocking black teeth and a smile all over the internet. Charcoal black toothpaste has become really popular because it’s good for making your teeth whiter and brighter. Read along for simple instructions and DIY recipe.
I’ve always been a fan of charcoal because you can do so much with it. If you use it in a skincare mask, it will draw out the impurities. It works the same with your teeth drawing out the stains from drinking coffee, tea, or wine and giving your smile a refresh. At first I didn’t believe activated charcoal worked for whitening enamel, but it does and it’s safe to use. So, if you are looking for a non-toxic toothpaste solution, you are going to love making this at home.
Activated Charcoal Toothpaste Ingredients

For this charcoal toothpaste recipe you are going to need two ingredients plus a few mixing tools. Here is what I purchased for this DIY.
- 1 TBS Coconut oil (this is the one I use)
- 2 tsp Activated Charcoal powder or capsules (I used the capsules obviously. They are a little more messy though.)
- Small Mixing Spatula
- Small Tin for Mixing
Activated Charcoal Toothpaste Instructions
I like to use Coconut oil for my toothpaste recipe because it’s anti-bacterial and helps to clean the teeth. Just add the coconut oil to the small tin and then the activated charcoal. Next, mix it all together. apply it to your toothbrush and begin brushing your teeth. I like to brush for a few minutes and have found that the longer I leave the toothpaste on my teeth, the whiter my teeth will get.
I have always been told that my teeth aren’t going to get much whiter than what they already are. With that said, I did notice that mine got at least 1-2 shades brighter after brushing them with the charcoal. I was pretty happy with that!
The only warning I would give with this is that you need to be careful where you make it. Charcoal can really stain thing’s like clothes and carpet. So, make sure you mix this on wax paper or somewhere that is easy to clean up.
You can also purchase toothpaste containers on Amazon which might make applying your toothpaste a million times easier. Just make sure to double or triple your recipe depending on how much you want. This recipe should last you a week or so before it runs out.
Have a great day guys!
