Here in the Pacific Northwest, where spring means more
rain and summer is still three months away, you have to find other ways to bring in the fashion sunshine because the weather is not going to lend a hand.
Spring fashion trends have led me in a fashion direction I am ready to chase down: Grandma Chic. Tiny floral prints on your shirt, thick rimmed glasses (yes, mine really are prescription lenses), paired with high waisted skirts, socks and oxford flats all pulled together with a belted cable-knit sweater will make you standout this spring. Grandma Chic fashion is popping up everywhere. The key to this style is to wear trendy-cuts with older fashion twists in pattern, material and detail. A flowwy, sheer, print top paired with a high waisted structured skirt makes the perfect combination. But what pieces can you add to your wardrobe to gain this style success? If you don’t have a grandma’s closet to go through, follow these tips.
Tiny prints for tops or bottoms are a must. Lace trimmed and ruffles? Even better! A longer top allows you to tuck it into a high waisted skirt. Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns.
I love the oxfords that are popping up. You have so many options from flats to wedges. DSW and ModCloth have awesome selections.
Cardigans are a must have, any style that you can layer and layer with will do. Check out style.com’s “Get the Look Guide” to the Grandma Chic Cardigan Trend to show you a comfy way to incorporate this look into your wardrobe. Both styles of cardigan below offer Grandma Chic attributes: the oversized look of the left cardigan would work perfect open by itself or belted to create a nice waist. The cardigan on the right is simple and structured, pair it over a floral print top and you will be Grandma Chic.
Remember if you’re not comfortable with going all out on a trend, ease into it with one article of clothing per-outfit that helps bring out the style you are after. Have fun with fashion, its what make you unique.
