I’ve wanted to do an at-home DIY Dermaplaning Tutorial for a while now for you guys. This is an anti-aging beauty gadget skincare treatment that requires a blade and is typically done at a spa, but truth be told, you can totally do it yourself, and save some cash. Not only does it get rid of unwanted facial hair, but it also leaves your skin dewy, glowing, and exfoliated to a baby soft complexion. So, I’m going to show you how to Dermaplane your own face, answer your questions, talk about what to expect with pro’s and cons, and give you some skincare tips and tricks.
What Dermaplaning is good for
Back in the day (as my daughters say), I worked at several medical spa’s, and Dermaplaning was on the spa menu. This was ten years ago; so Dermaplaning your skin as an anti-aging treatment isn’t anything new. However, I do think that it is just now picking up popularity as a skincare treatment since so many beauty brands are coming out with their own DIY Dermaplaning devices. Honestly, I’m all about it, and you should be too.
Here is what you can expect from this DIY Dermaplaning tutorial

Dermaplaning for Facial Hair Removal
Let’s first chat about the hair removal you get from Dermaplaning your skin. We can all agree that facial hair can be a real problem, and solving it is not so easy. Whether you have chin hair, upper lip hair, or some peach fuzz on your face. Getting rid of facial hair can be one of the most painful experiences a woman can undergo. Hello, laser hair removal treatments, waxing, and threading. Ouch.
Yet, leaving that hair can be a source of a lot of embarrassment to some women, especially with all the stigma around it. With that said, if you have unwanted hair on your face, I wouldn’t do this treatment for that reason alone. Dermaplaning does remove unwanted hair on the face, but it does so much more, including giving you gorgeous and glowing skin.
Trying DIY Dermaplaning for the first time
Don’t be nervous. When I first heard of Dermaplaning forever ago, I thought it was so dumb…basically shaving your face, but with a fancier name. But it does so much more than just remove unwanted hair, it really does leave your skin glowing, fresh, and super exfoliated. When I was a working esthetician, I saw such good results for my clients, and, I want you to have the same. So, I’m going to teach you how to do it at home. Of course, I will totally talk about the difference between having a professional Dermaplaning treatment and a DIY.
DIY Dermaplaning vs. Professional
Like I said, I use to do these treatments on clients for around $75 to $100 dollars per session. Of course, they got so much more than just a standard Dermaplaning treatment; we did pre and post treatments too, and it felt like a facial with some added exfoliation. So, if you want some pampering, go in for a treatment. If you want to do a DIY Dermaplaning treatment at home, do it; you’re totally capable. I promise.
Estheticians, nurses, and whoever else that offers these spa and medical-spa skincare treatments usually use a surgical grade scalpel to remove the dead skin from your face. Sounds scary, but it’s not! They just take the blade and gently press it on your skin and “scrape” upwards to remove built-up skin cells. With a professional, you don’t have to worry about cutting your skin or leaving little scratches. They 1,000% know how to give you the best treatment possible.
With that said, you need to check out my tutorial to see how easy Dermaplaning is to do at home.
What you need for your DIY Dermaplaning skincare treatment
You really don’t need a ton of anything to do your DIY dermaplaning skincare treatment. Obviously, you want to make sure that you have a Dermaplaning tool that works well for exfoliating the skin. There are several new beauty tools available that have a scalpel-like ends that are created to mimic the treatment you would get in office. I, however, used this Dermaplaning tool I found on Amazon, and it was around $6. To be honest, this eyebrow and face razor is exactly what we used 10 years ago to do this treatment on clients. I’m not kidding! And we charged a ton for it too.
Now you can buy much fancier Dermaplaning tools like the Dermaflash (around $189), and the Stacked Skincare Dermaplaning Tool (around $75).
What you need:
- Dermaplaning tool (I bought this one for $6!)
- Cleanser
- Toner
- Moisturizer
Who should avoid Dermaplaning and who is it for
This DIY treatment is not for: If you have acne and it’s active, you should stay away from Dermaplaning. You don’t want to accidentally scrape a blemish and then cause more inflammation. Also, because this treatment does remove hair at the same time, the re-growth of hair could cause you more problems than good.
Because this treatment is a bit more abrasive, you should avoid this treatment if you have rosacea or if you’ve had a reaction to microdermabrasion in the past.
This DIY skincare treatment is for: Definitely do Dermaplaning at home if you want an anti-aging treatment, softer skin, tighter pores, less fine lines and wrinkles, and more.
What to expect after Dermaplaning your Skin
After you do your DIY Dermaplaning treatment, your skin will be slightly red. If you’ve had a microdermabrasion before, it feels almost identical to that. Like you’ve just sat in the sun, and you have a slight sunburn. Your skin will and should feel like it has just had a treatment; however, it definitely shouldn’t feel painful in any way. Also, you will immediately feel how baby soft your skin is.
You will notice after about a day after that your skin looks fresh, glowing, and gorgeous. There shouldn’t be any other side effects than that! You can go on with your normal skincare schedule, but avoid using any other topical exfoliation for a few days post- treatment.
Speaking of that, please, for the love of all things good, DO NOT use ANY extra exfoliant on your skin after you’ve finished your treatment. Doing this is entirely overboard, and you can damage your skin by accidentally burning it. How? Because you’ve just removed a bunch of dead skin cells already, and you don’t need to remove any more.
Ultimate Dermaplaning DIY Tutorial
Now, here is what you’ve all been waiting for. Check out this step-by-step guide to doing your own dermaplaning skin exfoliation treatment at home. You can get soft, glowing, radiant, and gorgeous looking skin pretty quickly with this at-home and anti-aging face treatment.
- Prep your skin by double cleansing it to remove any and all makeup.
- Tone your skin and make sure that it is really dry before doing any dermaplaning.
- Now, pull your skin right with one hand and then take your dermaplaning device (I am using this one ) with the other, and begin to press gently on your skin and move the blade upwards on your face. You want to do one section of your face at a time. It will feel as if you are scraping your skin little bit but little bit. You want to make sure that you are doing small and quick strokes upwards on the face.
- Do step #3 on your left cheek, chin, right cheek, forehead.
- WARNING: Listen up sister, you need to pay attention to where exactly you are going with your blade. It could be really easy for you to jack up your eyebrows and accidentlly shave them off if you’re not careful. So..be warned and be fully aware of where you are going with your dermaplaning blade.
- Do not go over the same place a million times on your face. Just start with a little bit and see how your skin reacts.
- Apply your hydration, moisturizer, or skin care oil to your face for your post-treatment. Again, please make sure your moisturizer doesn’t contain any Retinol, Glycolic, or Vitamin C as this could irritate your already exfoliated skin.
Removing Dead Skin Cells
I think you will be surprised at how easy dermaplaning actually is! Also, you’re going to love how it makes your skin healthier by removing all the top dead cells on your skin. Talking About a win-win deal here, huh? Removing dead skin cells is essential to the overall health of your skin. If you don’t remove them, you get a build up, and it can leave your complexion looking dull. You don’t want that! Having skin cell build up also makes your makeup sit terribly on the skin (just being honest).
So, what does this mean for you? Do the treatment, girl! If you are nervous, get a girlfriend, get your courage up and give it a go!
All you have to do is purchase a dermaplaning device. It’s a simple tool with blades. Sounds scary, but it’s not! Believe in yourself; you’ve got this!
You will immediately see and feel the difference in your skin. You’ll have the hairless, silky-smooth skin you’ve always dreamt of. And believe me when I tell you, not even the smallest hairs are left. Yes, even that little baby hair you might have on your cheeks that really bothers you disappears. At least it did for me!
You won’t feel the slightest pain or unease when dermaplaning your skin. In fact, the whole procedure is really quick…like 5 minutes, maybe. And, you will end up with skin that’s more glowy and radiant than ever!
So anyways, goodbye long waiting lines, crowded beauty salons, and forever-far and costly esthetician appointments! Do your DIY dermplaning, at home my friends. Or, go to a spa. Whatever suits you!
If you are considering dermaplaning, you should definitely go for it!
